(to see the painting click here)
The waves, the waves, crash in again. Again
The sordid foam splashes down upon sin.
The sinners lie, abandoned in their shame,
The serpents sigh, content within the din.
Oh why, oh God, oh why did these men die?
Did they deserve your wrath? Within, I cry.
Simple servants suff’ring on the surface
Of the sea. Servants torn asunder by
The terror of the waves. Here in this place
Of fallen men, beneath the waves so high,
The sinners lie, the serpents sigh, and I,
Oh I, I sit in terror by and by.
When I first read this I didn't like it...but it was because I didn't get it---looked at the painting and now---it's sad but I do like it. (Also, I noticed "intriguing" was one of your 'reaction' choices--and as soon as I was done laughing I simply HAD to choose that one :P )
